Prove People Wrong with Results

Being a website developer, we run into many people that are looking to start a business and many of them tell us about their hardships they encounter on their journey to creating their business. That lead me to want to create this blog post about believing in yourself because most people around you, will not.

When talking to these people I realized that we all had the same or similar hardships in the beginning stemming from people around us. We all had people saying all or some of these things:

  • your business idea will not work
  • give it up and get a "real" job
  • stop wasting your money
  • there are so many (insert your business idea here) already out there
  • startups are only for people with money
  • and so on.

These are only a few. I could go on all day with things people have said to me or the people I talked to.

Regardless of what people have to say about you or your business idea, you need to continue persevering. If you believe in yourself, that is all that you will ever need. Let negative comments from others motivate you to continue with your ideas. Let those comments drive you to get more done with your business.

I remember when I was in college and looking for a job, going to interviews, I interviewed at this one place which changed me forever. Just like anyone else, I was in the parking lot, 30 minutes early, bursting with joy that I landed an interview with such a large company for a java developer position. Finally there was 10 minutes left before the interview so I went inside. They took me to an empty conference room with a whiteboard. Eventually the person that was going to do my interview came in. We exchanged greetings and immediately the interview began. It started off great. He asked general questions about website development and programming languages which I could easily answer. Then he moved on to more challenging questions dealing with programming languages that were not mentioned in the requirements. And when I could not answer his questions, he proceeded to draw out diagrams on the whiteboard and then chastise me for not knowing what they meant. He continued to ask more and more questions about what I did know. After a while he stopped, sat down and began to ask me where I went to college. When I responded with the University of Mississippi, he said "Well are they teaching you anything down there? Or did you simply not learn anything?". Those two questions caught me off guard, to which I responded "They taught me what is on my resume.". After a few more questions similar to those he proceeded to giving me advice on how to teach myself, since my school had apparently not taught me anything in his eyes. After getting talked down to for about 30 minutes, he walks me to his corner office, and says "I did not get here by playing video games and making passable grades in school. I got here by working hard and being prepared for interviews.". And the last thing he said to me once I was leaving was "Make sure you are prepared for interviews like this so you don't waste people's time, and teach yourself something. I am sorry but we don't need people like you in our company.".

This whole situation lit a fire inside of me so bright that it forced me to create my own company. I did not go to anymore interviews after that one because I refused to be talked down by anyone else. And that fire is what motivates me to keep going, and better myself and my business. I strive to show everyone that I do not need anyone's approval to be successful.

So when people start to bring you down. Let that fire push you to do great things and continue doing great things.

I hope that my story helps open people's eyes to how the corporate world can be and how situations like that can be turned to make good things comes from them. If you have been through similar situations, make sure you share them with us in the comment's section below or if you want to privately share them with me you can email me at admin@jmswebsitedevelopment.com.
