Looking for hosting for your website? Too many choices? Not sure which one works best for you? Trying to figure out which hosting can be difficult but it doesn't have to be impossible.
When choosing a hosting plan, it is important to keep in mind the amount of traffic and the type of website you have. Sometimes the most expensive option is not the best. This is especially important for new businesses that are trying to spend their money wisely.
Well I am here to break down the ins and outs of hosting. Hopefully after you read this article, you will have a better understanding of what you need for your website.
1. Different Types of Hosting
1. Shared Hosting
Shared hosting is a good option for people starting out or maybe a simple website. This type of hosting is called shared because your website is located in the same server as many other websites which can cause a problem with your resource performance. This means that the speed of your website can be affected from time to time based on how much the other websites are doing.
While that is possible, it happens quite rarely, and most will not notice this happening unless you are trying to run a high traffic website, like a widely popular-commerce store. So if your website has little to moderate traffic, this type of hosting is best for you.
2. Virtual Private Server (VPN) Hosting
VPS is kind of the middle option for hosting. It is better than the shared hosting but not as good as a dedicated server(which I talk about next). Shared and VPS hosting are similar because you are still sharing a server but the difference is that VPS allows your website to handle larger amounts of traffic but still will not handle huge spikes of traffic. It also offers you a few more customization of the server and usually more storage space.
This is best for people that have a website that is starting to gain a larger audience and traffic. This option is what most people choose for an e-commerce store and almost all will run perfectly fine with this type of hosting.
3. Dedicated Server Hosting
Dedicated server hosting may sound like the best option from the previous two options but this type of hosting is not meant for everyone. While they are one of the best options to get for your website, they can be one of the most expensive options, require a high level of technical know-how, and required regular maintenance to keep it running smoothly.
This type of hosting is for people are very technically inclined and know what they are doing. While all the other hosting plans are "managed" meaning that they are mostly controlled by the providers to keep the servers up and running, the dedicated server will required more management from your side. The provider will still handle some issues but only if they are cause from their end.
4. Cloud Hosting
Cloud hosting is the new way to get hosting. It can be very helpful for websites that are planning of growing very quickly. This type of hosting is very scalable because you only pay for what you need.
This type of hosting can be good for anyone whether you are a small website or a larger, high traffic website.
2. Choosing Hosting Providers
There are so many web hosting providers out there. Many of them are great and similar in performance. So it comes down to what you need and pricing.
Choosing your hosting provider is something I recommend you research on your own because only you know what you need and how much you would like to pay for it.
I personally have had good experiences with GoDaddy and Hostgator. Some people say they have had bad experiences with Godaddy's customer service but in my personal experience, I have had no issues. As far as HostGator, this is the hosting that we use for our websites and recommend for most. Their prices are very good and their performance is also very good.
If you choose HostGator, make sure you use the promo code "JMSWEBDEV" to get a discount on us.
Hopefully this helps you figure out what type of hosting is best for your website. Just remember that even if you choose a hosting plan that does not fit your website, you can simply change it. It it quite simple to switch over your website and most hosting providers will walk you through the entire process.
